Summary: Provides professional engineering expertise in assisting project manager and other engineering personnel in implementing projects, supporting field maintenance crews and other related engineering activities.

Typical Tasks may include but are not limited to:
? Perform engineering duties in planning and design, and provide technical guidance regarding the construction and maintenance of building structures, and facilities, such as substations, transmission towers
? Provide technical advice regarding design, construction, or program modifications and structural repairs to industrial and managerial personnel.
? Inspect project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety or sanitation standards.
? Estimate quantities and cost of materials, equipment, or labor to determine project feasibility.
? Test soils and materials to determine the adequacy and strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt, or steel.
? Compute load and grade requirements, water flow rates, and material stress factors to determine specifications.
? Plan and design various systems and structures, following construction and government standards, using design software and drawing tools.
? Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects.

Specific Tasks:
? Provides engineering support to BPA?s Research and Development projects, solves routine and special engineering problems related to transmission and fiber optic line design; produces transmission line design documents and drawings needed to support the capital and expense programs; and provides assistance in tailoring engineering design tools for use in standard cases and developing design strategies for unusual construction and material requirements.
? Works with other engineers on the coordination of necessary activities to establish the most effective location of facilities, considering performance, cost, environmental impacts, and problems related to public issues.
? Monitors the progress of the overall design of assigned projects, interacting extensively with the BPA Project Manager and other engineers, documenting all pertinent changes encountered as well as their impacts. Initiates necessary adjustments to the workflow while remaining in continual contact with the Project Manager to alert appropriate personnel of any work slippage or other consequences.
? Works with other engineers to design special installations for unusual conditions where standards or precedent designs are not applicable. Completes special design studies as assigned where unique or unusually complex problems are involved.
? Reviews and checks designs prepared by other engineers and technicians to ensure accuracy, adequacy, and conformance to BPA?s requirements and design parameters. Reviews and evaluates prepared drawings, material certifications and submittals for conformance to the design specifications.
? Provides technical assistance to the line-rating engineer and provides Quality Assurance/Quality Control assistance for transmission line materials and specifications on an as needed basis; develop, coordinate, and evaluate estimates for the line upgrade and refurbishment programs with other design groups; investigate unusual mechanical and electrical phenomena involving conductor design and operation; and develop corrective measures to problems that occur on existing transmission lines or during construction of new lines.
? Provides sag-tension calculations for conductor, fiber optic cable and overhead ground wire, interpret, collect, coordinate, and review design and field data for use in Transmission Services databases to produce accurate transmission line models for engineering analysis.

Education, Experience, Job Training:
? Bachelor of Engineering degree and practical experience required.
? 10+ years Experience in a civil/mechanical engineering position to plan or design transmission lines within the construction industry.
