Mainframe Automation Specialist

Key Responsibilities / Key Requirements and Technology Experience:
  • The candidate needs to have an Expert level working knowledge of the Mainframe Automation (OPS/MVS) and similar automation tools identified within. Responsible for installation of Automation software, and must possess strong problem determination capabilities.

Technical Skills
  • Must have extensive knowledge of IBM z-Enterprise server hardware and in-depth working knowledge of RMF and SMF data
  • Strong technical Skills in Mainframe Systems programming (z/OS operating system, Customization parameters, IPL Process, Install and customize IBM and Non IBM products)
  • Expert working knowledge on different automation environments esp. OPS/MVS
  • Skills in Upgrades, Installation and customization of OPS/MVS
  • Automation alert notifications like emailing, paging, ticketing and console messages with OPS/MVS (and other automation products)
  • Message handling and suppression using Automation tools ( CA/OPS MVS)
  • Procedure for bringing up and bringing down application during IPL time
  • Automate the subsystems DB2, CICS, MQ, JES2, TSO and VTAM using CLIST’s and REXX and several full- screen panels to display the status of automation at regular intervals
  • Checks for dependencies in an orderly fashion during Shutdown/IPL time.
  • Good Knowledge in Rexx and Clist Language
  • Exposure to different automation environments such as Tivoli System Automation/NetView/WWAO, GDPS Automation, BMC AutoOperator.
Key Responsibilities:
  • CA-OPS MVS skills. Enhancing automation using OPS/REXX coding techniques.
  • Defining and setting automation using OPSVIEW panels.
  • Support maintenance activities, releases and major OS upgrades.
  • Providing 24x7 Oncall support for Automation
  • supporting Disaster recovery exercises
  • Incident Management / Problem Management by performing problem analysis and resolution implementation
  • Review system indicators (logs, dumps, error) logs for pro-active management of system problems
  • Work with operations team to monitor, maintain and IPL systems to improve consistency and availability
  • Maintenance/Development of existing/new automation rules and scripts
  • Implement appropriate tools and processes to automate repeated tasks
  • Create and maintain SOP’s and and run-books
  • Implement changes as needed to support other towers and day-to-day operations.
  • Work with IBM and other Independent Software Vendors on a regular basis
  • Provide regular management reports / analysis to senior management team regarding Incidents, Changes and requests
  • Mentor and Train junior resources

Good to have Skills:
  • Installing, customizing and maintaining the z/OS Operating system and related software products.
  • Participate in analyzing, planning and implementation of upgrades to z/OS and installed SW
  • Resolve z/OS operating system, system z hardware and software issues
  • Capable of z/OS Performance Analysis using various tools such as IBM's RMF, SMF and subsystem analysis tools
  • Working knowledge in VTAM and TCPIP
  • Experience in managing the mainframe network infrastructure for large mainframe enterprise
  • Provide network support for mainframe Infrastructure
  • Mainframe Network software installations, customization and evaluation.
  • Diagnose and resolve errors in major operating systems and subsystem components (e.g., z/OS, CICS, DB2, VTAM TCP/IP, SNA, JES2 system Z) and other critical required software.
