  • The Distribution Planning Engineer will be responsible for analysis and planning of distribution voltage overhead, underground and substation systems. Experienced in distribution voltage technologies, automation, protection, OH/UG design, OH/UG planning, OH/UG construction. Provide short-term field visits to validate existing system assets and configuration and coordinate with engineering and construction teams.
  • Assignments may include:
  • Plan OH and UG distribution circuits and substations utilizing client standards plus modern industry standards optimizing performance through distribution automation technologies.
  • Power flow modeling of distribution line and substation projects using Synergi, CYME, SINCAL, Windmil, SKM, etap, Aspen and/or other planning software.
  • Reliability analysis and solution simulation.
  • Siting, routing, design and evaluation of distribution line and substation projects.
  • Load transfer capability analysis.
  • Interconnection capacity analysis.
  • Perform power system planning and operations including: transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis.
  • Review and revise equipment specifications and configuration including protection settings.
  • Assess feasibility or soundness of proposed applications when data is insufficient or testing is advisable.
  • Prepare proposals and engineering/project cost estimates.
  • Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports or project design assignments.
  • Lead design and project management responsibilities.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel.
  • Sector and service marketing material development and general marketing responsibilities.

  • This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from accredited program.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience (completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience).
  • Understanding of power grid and distribution power flow.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledgeable of renewable and distributed generation integration, energy storage and advanced technologies preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of technical standards, energy markets and regulatory frameworks preferred.
  • Experience with power flow modeling software (specifically Synergi, CYME, SINCAL, Windmil, SKM, etap, Aspen and/or other planning software).
  • Completion of FE exam and/or licensed PE preferred.
