4 Month Contract to Hire

A day in the life:
The day usually begins with checking reports of over-night jobs and making a determination if any system requires immediate attention. Obviously, the incident queue will speed up the determination process so the UNIX admin will also have the duty to respond to incidents during business hours regardless if they are on-call or not.

Project tasks and meetings with colleagues and other groups are also part of the daily duties of a UNIX admin. The team must be informed on status of current and future projects. Their presence at several weekly meetings held by the project management, build and architecture teams is needed to get a good understanding of upcoming projects that will involve UNIX and Linux systems. Additionally, a weekly one-hour team meeting is held to discuss the team's needs, status on projects, incidents and issues.

The exciting part of the job is mostly determined by challenges presented by projects and incidents. In a healthcare environment sometimes the application drives the technology. As a UNIX admin, it is our responsibility to put first the interests of the organization by applying approved and tested standards and policies. This usually leads to long discussions with the vendor where ideas and suggestions are brought up to balance the application need with the current standards and implementation processes. While this process may become political with groups holding their position better than others, it is a time where a UNIX admin must demonstrate stability, knowledge and to provide solutions that meets and exceeds expectations. Working and having a good professional relationship with other groups (storage, networking, application, infrastructure, etc.) also helps allowing for a quicker turnaround.

Other activities, which may not occur daily, are related to patching and security. Every three months, the "PatchFest” task allows all system administrators to apply security patches, firmware updates and bug fixes to all operating systems. This is an event that requires a lot of planning, testing and deep understanding of our current infrastructure. It is also a time where the regular "8 hour” schedule may now be 12, even 14 hours. Yet with good planning and exercise, this task could be a fun event creating a strong bond across colleagues and teams. It is indeed one time when we all come together and make our environment better.

To conclude, we have a variety of opportunities in different areas. Projects, incidents, requests, security, infrastructure, brainstorming and even internal politics. Some days we may have them all, some may have one or two. Regardless of workload we all try to keep a work-life balance so every month we organize an event for all of us to get together out of the office and enjoy life.
