This position serves as a key team member of the Vacaville SHE team and provides subject-matter expertise, direction, and consultation for the implementation of Physical Safety programs at one of the largest and most complex biotech manufacturing sites in the Roche network. This position reports to the Associate Director of SHE at Vacaville. In this key role, the successful candidate will also be responsible for leading business-process improvements for site safety programs.

In addition to the above responsibilities, this position will assist with or lead the implementation, compliance, and continuous improvement of Genentech's Contractor Safety, Control of Hazardous Energy, and Electrical Safety Programs across the Vacaville site.

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for assigned safety programs, providing related guidance and support to client groups, colleagues and management through training courses, inspections, written programs, and EHS website content. Work with cross-functional teams to effectively and efficiently implement programs across diverse work-groups and organizations. Assure compliance with regulations, corporate requirements, and local program requirements. Actively engage in best practice sharing with other PARENT COMPANY sites and similar businesses outside of PARENT COMPANY.
  • Work collaboratively with site engineering, research, manufacturing, facilities, EHS, and other business units to develop practical strategies to ensure successful implementation of programs that align with business objectives.
  • Assist with government regulatory agency interactions relative to regulated safety programs, including reporting, notification, facilitating regulatory inspections, and ensuring closure of corrective actions.
  • Exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Champions self-initiated projects and justifies goals to management.
  • Develop short- and long-term strategic implementation plans for three key safety programs to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and conformance with company standards. Utilize best-industry practices to identify and manage risk while minimizing the impact on our key stakeholders. Make prudent decisions to identify and address current risks and future compliance challenges as well as continuous improvement opportunities. Ensure the site complies with applicable regulatory requirements and is "audit ready” at all times. Track and trend compliance findings and take appropriate actions to ensure compliance and prevent reoccurrence

Desired Skills:
  • Experience with Lean/Six Sigma business process improvement methodology is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in managing and developing staff is required.
  • Exerts significant influence on the overall objectives and long-range goals of the organization.
  • The ability to effectively lead and motivate cross-functional teams in a fast-paced and diverse environment.
  • Provides guidance to management and manages work activities of other staff members for specific projects or objectives.

BS or MS in a relevant scientific or engineering field. A minimum of 12 years of relevant work experience in safety, health, and environment (EHS) and/or EHS program management. Certification in one or more of the following areas is strongly preferred: Certified Safety Professional, Construction Health & Safety Technician, and/or Professional Engineer.
