Position Summary:
The Engineering Technical Specialist for Machine Products Engineering (MPE) is a mid-to-senior level engineering position applicable to any discipline but with focus on New Product Development and Configuration. The Engineering Technical Specialist role is responsible for a narrow segment of the MPE business and has expertise in that area of specialization. Further, the specialist must be able to accurately and effectively pursue impacted suppliers and customers of their specialty regardless of business process and area of the business. These engineers must be highly energized, confident, and able to leverage rationality, reciprocity, and persuasion to achieve their objectives.

Areas of specialty may include:
  • New Product Development (Finite Element Analysis, Motion Control, Product Testing and Validation)
  • Configuration Management
  • Technical Documentation
Job Responsibilities:
New Product Development
FEA Specialist
  • Use ANSYS FEA software to determine deflection, heat transfer, vibration and flow.
  • Verify static FEA analysis using testing procedures.
  • Verify dynamic FEA results using modal analysis techniques.
  • Perform hand calculations for deflection, bearing stiffness, etc.
Motion Control Specialist
  • Perform servo setup and tuning.
  • Diagnose servo and CNC behaviors.
  • Try-out & implementation of advanced NC control features.
  • Develop specialty motion-control NC part programming.
  • Implement other closed loop control.
  • Diagnose machine motion dynamic issues.
  • Investigate process defects/marks/shadows.
  • Implement inspection sensors and processes involving motion.
  • Conduct Quantum XL analysis.
  • Provide runoff and product verification testing and support.
  • Conduct modal analysis.
Configuration Management
  • Record and clarify project budgets by discipline in SAP.
  • Update variant configuration options by machine model.
  • Align variant configuration to engineering bill of material.
  • Measure performance of disciplinary achievement of budget, both labor and material based.
  • Configure and control service kits for machines in field.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, define and implement solutions that prevent recurrence of the problem.
  • Interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Comprehend and effectively communicate verbally and in writing to specific audiences while using good judgement regarding appropriateness of communications.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to communicate directly with upper management and Gleason Sales and Service organizations around the world.
  • Ability to publish technical documents of tests or analysis and guiding resolution of technical issues on Gleason machines.
  • Participate in engineering teams and contribute ideas, even when not directly addressed for input, summarize results and derive action plans, next steps and schedule; initiate resolution conflict, use good judgement when it is necessary to include leadership in conflict resolution.
  • Ability and willingness to train, mentor and advise less senior engineers.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and deliver results; ability to manage schedule and deliverables of own tasks as well as others.
  • Effectively use software application tools for communication, data analysis or other daily work tasks.
  • Create, document and manage projects through a milestone based process; comprehension of critical path management.
New Product Development Skills
FEA Specialist Skills:
  • In depth knowledge of ANSYS and FEA techniques.
  • In depth knowledge of Pro/ENGINEER.
  • Capable of mathematical analysis of mechanical systems.
  • Ability to bring creative and innovative ideas to understand problems and solve issues.
  • Capable of independent, first-principles-based analysis of mechanical systems behavior.
  • Numerical methods of analysis in Excel (and/or Matlab, Python, etc.)
Motion Control Specialist
  • Understanding of servo control topologies and tuning strategies, frequency domain measurements, tools and techniques.
  • Capable of mathematical analysis of dynamic (servo) systems.
  • Ability to bring creative and innovative ideas to understand problems and solve issues.
  • Capable of independent, first-principles-based analysis of electro-mechanical systems behavior.
  • Practical understanding of electrical principles, electronics, sensors, and feedback.
  • Numerical methods of analysis in Excel (and/or Matlab, Python, etc.)
  • Scientific observation and conjectural problem-solving.
Configuration Management Skills
Data Management skills:
  • Manage large volumes of data with a high attention to detail.
  • Summarize and present data results to others, including team members and upper management.
  • Assist with complex problem solving that involves Gleason business processes, SAP applications, and engineering product portfolio.
Microsoft Excel Skills:
  • Use Excel functions such as: SUMIF, VLOOKUP, Grouping, and Subtotals to create templates for use by others. This includes the ability to document the instructions on how to use the templates, extract the data and implement the data in the template.
SAP Skills:
  • Understand Variant Configuration (VC) modeling concepts.
  • Create and maintain material masters.
  • Maintain bills of materials.
  • Modify VC Logic on bills of materials.
  • Extract costs for bills of materials
  • Understand types of materials that appear on bills of materials and how to manage the costs of each type.
Preferred Education/Training/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant technical field.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
