Position Description Responsible for performing professional level civil engineering work primarily in the design and technical review of public works projects that assists in the orderly development of the City. Position requested to cover substantial increase in small wireless communication installation reviews as brought on by recent changes in and implementation of state legislation, in addition to staff preparation for and responsibility of expedited plan reviews in the coming months.
Skills Required •The theory, principles and practices of civil engineering. •Public works design standards, and construction and the methods, materials and techniques used in the construction of public works projects. •City and state laws, ordinances and regulations governing municipal engineering. •Bentley MicroStation drafting and design software (latest version). •Bentley InRoads design software (latest version). •Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Computer Aided Design and/or Drafting (CADD) Standards & Maricopa . •Advanced mathematical techniques. •Microsoft Office products and other relevant technologies. Ability to: •Proficiently design a variety of civil engineering projects utilizing computer aided design and drafting software. •Use graphic instructions such as engineering drawings, as-built drawings, and be able to read and use zoning maps, quarter-section maps, plat maps and aerial maps. •Measure distance using calibrated instruments. •Listen and effectively communicate ideas, technical advice, recommendations in one-on-one, small group and large group settings through oral, visual and written communication. •Apply civil engineering principles to work assignments. •Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar for many levels of staff, citizen groups, Boards and Commissions, contractors and City Council. •Make complex mathematical calculations. •Provide thoughtful and thorough analysis. •Handle multiple projects simultaneously and use good judgment in prioritizing work assignments. •Attend or conduct various meetings as needed. •Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public. •May be required to drive to project sites to review and ensure compliance.
Skills Preferred •Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Computer Aided Design and/or Drafting (CADD) Standards & Maricopa Association of Governments Standard Specifications and Details a plus. •Transoft AutoTURN design software a plus.
Experience Required 5 years of work experience developing plans, specifications and estimates for various public works projects
Experience Preferred 7 years of work experience developing plans, specifications and estimates for various public works projects
Education Required •Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited educational institution. •An equivalent combination of education and job related experience may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.
