Position Description Main Points: • Minor Projects – recommend equipment and implementing upon receipt. • Make necessary daily changes to switches, routers, and firewalls. • Troubleshoot network connectivity issues as they arise. • Maintaining UPS’s and network equipment. • Working with vendors. ***Under general/immediate supervision, performs work of routine or complex difficulty installing, and maintaining computer networks, operating software, communication systems, and performs other duties as assigned. This classification is assigned to the Department of Information Technology and is distinguished as the second level in the Network Specialist Series having responsibility for designing, upgrading, troubleshooting and maintaining citywide network systems and connectivity to other, Local, State, and Federal government and agencies systems.*** • Researches and evaluates network hardware and software such as routers, bridges and firewalls, voice over IP (VOIP) and communication and security protocols. • Monitors the performance of network communications and security systems to ensure network security. • Participates in the installation, configuration, and integration of network hardware, software, communication and connectivity devices in accordance with established procedures and security needs. • Uses specialized diagnostic tools to maintain, and repair computers, workstations, peripheral equipment and devices including computers operating software. • Repairs or replaces defective equipment and installs new equipment in network systems; cleans and adjusts equipment and coordinates the maintenance and modification of systems by initiating service calls to vendors and monitoring their work. • Serves as a technical resource, on network communications and security systems, to customers. • Coordinates cost effective upgrades to existing computer communication and security systems to prevent obsolescence. • Modifies and implements software; develops, modifies, and prepares report programs for retrieving historical data such usage records and other data; and documents system modifications. • Makes modifications to screens with graphic displays and modifies data reporting system; maintains computer files and the input/output database of the system. • Assists in the research for City acquisition, standard computer system, server and/or network technologies, and communication systems. • Assists with the specification, coordination, and installation of City multi-user computer systems, servers, networks, and/or associated hardware/software, and communication systems. • Installs, configures, and tests multi-user computer systems, servers and/or network environments, including additions, enhancements, and upgrades to component hardware, operating system software and resident applications. • Assists in evaluating maintenance agreements and services appropriate to maintain availability and function of City systems and networks according to established service-level agreements. • Documents and maintains procedural guidelines by which clients are given physical and logical access to systems and applications resident on multi-user computer systems, servers, and/or networks. • Assists in the creation and modification of computer system and/or network configurations to accommodate local and remote attached peripheral devices. • Identifies and troubleshoots to resolution problems associated with multi-user computer systems, servers, networks, and attached peripherals using protocol analyzers, communications trace utilities and/or other diagnostic tools. • Documents and maintains procedures, including instruction and operational interfaces, to backup data resident on multi-user computer systems and servers.Researches, evaluates and recommends voice solutions and associated equipment to be used at the City. • Provides on-call support for wireless infrastructure and technical needs.
Skills Required • Considerable knowledge of client hardware, software, and associated peripherals. • Considerable Knowledge of voice and data technologies and solution sets. • Skill in safe use of tools, communications equipment, and testing equipment. • Ability to follow standard practices and testing procedures for network installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. • Ability to keep records, prepare reports, and perform administrative tasks. • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. • Ability to make decisions recognizing established guidelines, precedents and practices, and to use resourcefulness and tact in meeting new problems. • Ability to comprehend architectural structure of buildings and facilities. • Ability to interpret and work from technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints. • Ability to analyze, trouble shoot, resolve problems related to equipment and operating system software configuration of assigned platforms. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships employees, outside contractors and vendors. • Ability to interpret and implement regulations, rules, and contract provisions for maximum benefit to City. • Must demonstrate behaviors that support the City's mission and core values. Experience Required Four (4) years of experience in network engineering which included the design and maintenance of LANs, WANS, VLANs, QOS, DNS, DHCP, Firewalls, core switching and routing, Cisco IOS, Cisco catalyst OS, RAS, VOIP; OR an equivalent combination of closely related training and work experience. Candidates possessing Cisco Certified Network associate (CCNA) or Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) are preferred.
Education Required Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or closely related field.
Additional Information The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
