General Responsibilities Remit union benefits timely and accurately. Research, document and track any system calculation problems and/or report problems as they are encountered until resolution. Complete audit reviews of union benefits to ensure remittances are accurate or if adjustments are required. Define and implement best practices with the assistance of Payroll management. • Run various reports; determine and change parameters needed for each reporting objective. • Apply various contractual calculations by interpreting union collective bargaining agreements and comparing union contract settlement summaries to calculations performed by the payroll system. • Ensure union benefits are set up in accordance with the approved contract settlement summary and with federal and state regulations. • Document the information details necessary to meet the benefit remittance requirements in a summary format that is easy to follow and is easily assessable. • Ensure the organization and maintenance of all hard copy and electronic files used in the preparation of benefits. • Maintain records of benefit payments and ensure appropriate documentation supports remittances. • Assist with creating and maintaining a shared Excel calendar of benefit changes for each month in the current year and in future years (i.e. all union benefits which have a potential rate increase in any given month). • Understand the payroll system benefit calculations and accrual processes; payroll system and Oracle financial system interfaces; and General Ledger accounting, including accruals and debits/credits. • Research previous remittances, when needed, to determine the need for adjustments. • Compare expected system calculation results to actual system calculation results and research discrepancies in detail. Determine and effectively communicate potential errors to management. • Serve as tier two support for union benefit and union leave plan questions. • Perform annual union pension analysis. Special Considerations • Flexibility with work schedule (required to change shifts and work days as business needs dictate) • Flexibility with work hours (must be able to work overtime as business needs dictate)
Education/Experience • Three to five years experience in related field as a Sr. Union Benefits Specialist • A Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources or related field preferred • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word • Working knowledge of union benefits • Working knowledge of multiemployer pension plans. • Working knowledge of defined benefit and defined contribution plans and related laws and regulations. Skills/Competencies: • MS Outlook, Excel and Word • Excellent organizational skills • Excellent reading and interpretation skills • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Ability to maintain confidential information • High degree of professionalism and solid ability in delivering high quality customer service and establishing/maintaining effective and collaborative working relationships. • Excellent judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills • Ability to work independently and as a team player
