Job Summary

The Manager of Workers' Compensation is responsible for daily claims oversight, administration of the Return to Work Program and management and mentorship of team members. The manager will work closely with the Health & Safety team, the Legal department, the insurance company and brokers, and other key stakeholders to ensure proper action plans are in place for favorable claim outcomes.

Essential Functions

  • Support the daily claim triage process and investigation for medical only and lost time claims, and develop and monitor system to collect release to work documentation, job duties and decisions on accommodations
  • Manage external vendors in the areas of claims administration, managed care, litigation, loss analysis, to ensure adherence to key performance indicators, utilization of best practices as well as company incident prevention goals and standard operating procedures
  • Oversee collection of required regulatory and company specific claim related data to ensure compliance with all record keeping, reporting, loss forecasting, and loss analysis requirements
  • Liaise with HR, Employee Relations, Sales Organization, Legal Department regarding liability, risk issues, and safety compliance and external attorneys for litigated claims
  • Responsible for the development, content and distribution of worker's compensation training materials and required postings in HQ, RDCs and stores
  • Provide weekly, monthly and quarterly claim updates
  • Manage, develop and support team in the day-to-day performance in their roles
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of multi-jurisdictional worker's compensation standards, practices, procedures, various laws and insurance company claim database systems
  • Solid experience working with internal legal department and external law firms
  • Detail-oriented with strong communication, problem solving, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Required Education, Certifications/Licenses, Related Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management or related field
  • 5+ years of hands-on multijurisdictional lost time claim experience
  • Solid experience working with internal legal team and external law firms

Preferred Education, Certifications/Licenses, Related Experience

  • An AIC, ARM, CPCU or other Risk Management designation

Physical Job Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position (standing and/or seated) more than half the time
  • This position requires the ability to spend more than half the time viewing computer monitors

Travel Requirements

  • This position commutes between regional offices/distribution centers less than 25% of the time
  • This position requires overnight domestic travel less than 25% of the time
  • Anticipated travel will be by car, air, and/or train
