The main responsibilities of the data engineer is to build and maintain data pipelines from external and internal sources and platforms for the purposes of monitoring the health of the Material Design system. The goal here is to architect access to data and assemble both structured and unstructured data in a reliable and scalable fashion through the use of a variety of methods such as API programming, web crawling/scraping etc. The data engineer will also work closely with a team of UX Researchers and Product/Program Managers to develop data set processes such as data shaping and manipulation. Additionally, the data engineer will be called upon to construct databases and dashboards that aim to deliver strategic and business insights for the team.

We are looking for a candidate with 5+ years of experience in a Data Engineer role, who has attained a Graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field.
The Data Engineer should have the following characteristics/skillsets:
  • Must have experience of building robust pipelines and data environments from both structured and unstructured sources.
  • Able to carry out various Data Manipulation and transformation tasks to create reliable and scalable datasets and databases.
  • Comfortable with scripting access from various external sources such as GitHub and StackOverflow.
  • This may involve skills necessary to script access to 3rd party APIs and web crawling/scraping.
  • Willing to learn to navigate and utilize the infrastructure and tools (e.g. BigQuery, Google Analytics).
  • Strong experience with using Python and SQL would be advantageous.
  • Experienced with building data products such as interactive dashboards.
