Job Duties
The USNA Gardens Unit is responsible for interpretive gardens and exhibits at the U.S. National Arboretum. Our efforts in the area of interpretation are key to informing and inspiring more than 500,000 visitors that come to the arboretum annually as well as those who interact with the arboretum through the internet, the Arboretum App, and other electronic means. Within this framework, volunteers may be utilized to serve as docents and to provide assistance with wayfinding needs.

(a) Responsibilities/Duties
This contractor will provide the following duties:
  • Manage all aspects of design and production of interpretive, wayfinding and regulatory signs on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum. Tasks include but are not limited to: research of subject matter, interview of subject matter experts on staff, writing, editing, formatting, procurement of photographs, drawings, or renderings needed for signs and other interpretive products, submission of draft products for review, technical work with companies that fabricate all kinds of signs, location of signs, and installation of signs.
  • Write and manage the production of brochures, rack pieces, fact sheets, and other written materials that interpret the gardens and collections, mission, and features of the U.S. National Arboretum.
  • Manage U.S. National Arboretum interpretive efforts that are carried out through USNA web pages, the Arboretum Botanical Explorer, the Arboretum App, and other electronic means.
  • Provide training for volunteer docents who interact with visitors.
  • Conduct user survey or observation of user patterns to measure the effectiveness of signs and other interpretive products.
SKILLS:
  • Skill in interpretative writing and graphic design.
  • Experience in the use of creative software such as ABODE Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer, including related equipment such as printers and scanners.
  • A qualified typist is required as well.
  • Have a personal Computer/laptop to access Outlook for e-mail purposes.
