Day-to-Day Responsibilities/Workload
The SQL DBA will take-on several database operational responsibilities such as:
  • Integrate operational plans, outlooks, forecasts, and recorded data
  • Provide interfaces to different reporting platforms and applications like Microsoft Excel, SAP BI/BW/HANA, Utilities International (UI), Workiva, FERC Module, O&M and Capital Workpaper systems, CAPMARS, Access/Oracle/DB2/Sybase systems, and the RO Model
  • Use ETL tools like SAS, and/or informatica to rules logic-driven data from different databases and data sources
  • Arrange to collect data and information from multiple application/platforms for purposes of gathering inputs for budgets, plans, forecasts, and outlooks
  • Manage database to be expansible and available for financial and operational data for 10 years
  • Design and optimize the SQL database to handle multiple simultaneous requests for input and output without conflicts
  • Provide lock-out periods for data consolidation and quality reviews.
  • Advise the GUI developers and other interface providers on the tables, SQL queries, triggers, stored
  • procedures and other objects to be used for reporting, and forecasting
  • Consolidate plan data and prepare for transfer of budgets to SAP system (BI/BW/HANA) through automated process
  • Write indexes and backend process to make data transaction operations fast and working at optimum levels
  • Facilitate and participate by responding to internal and external data quality audits
  • Ensure that the system is available 24/7/365, with advance communications given for known outages
  • Plan and build back-ups for failure recovery and archival for data beyond 5 years based on records retention policy
  • Document the database process, including all objects and their relations with each other (in Entity-relations diagram format), and with external system interfaces – in Microsoft Word document and process flows in Microsoft Visio diagrams.
  • Evaluate server, database, and network environment for performance improvement, to determine optimal technical components.
  • Develop database capabilities to support a variety of reporting needs, such as (but not limited to):
  • In the operating plan process, financial analysts and managers interact with the system through front-end GUIs like Excel or custom developed applications by inputting, modifying, updating, deleting information continually every month. This can sometimes result in multiple users updating the same record. This also results in financial budget data to the tune of tens of thousands of rows that are constantly updated. The ROC SQL database will house the data and prepare to upload them to SAP BI/BW
  • Like Op Plan data, Outlook data are updated every month, which requires supporting millions of rows of data every year.
  • Recorded data from SAP BW shall be aggregated and brought into the SQL server is expected to be in the range of 40 million rows every year. The SQL database must handle this data volumes for 5 years of prior history, and 5 years of forward history (approximately 300 million rows – because forward years are expected to have fewer rows of data)
