DB2i DBA / ISeries Administrator

Purpose of Position:
Responsible for system design, maintenance, Database tuning, configuration, and performance on the ISeries platform. Other application interfaces and 3rd party tools that support NW Natural's Customer Information System.

Position Essential Functions:
  • Provides primary DB2i DBA support including index tuning, schema changes and data replication.
  • Provides backup for ISeries system administration of hardware and software including performance, security, High Availability, SAN replication to 2nd warm site and backups on existing architecture which includes V7000 SAN, 2 P8's and 1 P7 running the latest version of the iSeries OS.
  • Develops documents and maintains procedures for system utilities, such as backups, restores, performance tuning, and configurations and performs daily and monthly backups of production systems and other backups as required.
  • Supports 3rd party tools for replication, encryption, change management and interfaces.
  • Performs database object promotions.
  • Works with IT team leads to ensure consistency in architecture, schema and change control for Customer Information Systems.
  • Effectively communicates design considerations and recommendations to team members and business.
  • Prepares specifications and design documents and other required documentation for ISeries related requests.
  • Responds to developer requests for changes.
  • Participates in on call rotation.
  • Participate in systems administration team and share responsibility for management of the ISeries. May serve on additional technology teams as required.

Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years iSeries system / DB2i administrator experience
  • In depth knowledge of the IBMi Access for Windows / System iNavigator tool set.
  • Experience designing and implementing: system architecture changes, database schema changes, database performance optimizations.
  • Experience working with vendor packages (i.e. replication, encryption, MQSeries, change management, goAnywhere).
  • Knowledge of object types and their creation.
  • Knowledge of and experience with logical and physical data modeling and database design, database security and integrity and indexing strategy and management.
  • Familiarity with Customer Information Systems (i.e. meter reading and billing systems) and experience with SQL servers are preferred.
  • Demonstrated willingness to acquire new skills and learn new tools.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to work effectively with employees at all levels and across departments.
  • Skilled at defining issues, analyzing and evaluating information, presenting recommendations and identifying alternative solutions.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed combined with extensive experience working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
Job Level Specific Duties
• Designs, plans, and implements most aspects of database management and may begin to specialize in one aspect of database management such as data administration, web connectivity, physical structure, logical design, SQL and SQL applications or overall architecture and database analysis.
• Plans and configures the physical and logical database environment.
• Evaluates and recommends the purchase and utilization of software products to assist in the management of data.
• Diagnoses problems and determines resolution for applications and system software.
• Measures performance and modifies system level configuration to optimize performance.
• Maintains physical integrity of all production databases.
• Anticipates business constraints and their applicability to database management.
• Performs database installation and configuration, tuning, capacity planning, health checks, backups and recovery and change management according to documented standards.
• Troubleshoots issues with database instances, disaster recovery, replication and backupsand eliminates root causes thru systematic problem management practices.

• Typically requires 4-6 years relevant experience.

Minimum Education and Certifications
• Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Skills
• Knows and consistently uses fundamentals of implementing and maintaining databases.
• Fundamental knowledge of actual database definition, design, and configuration.
• Knowledge includes experience on primarily standard databases along with exposure to more complex systems.
• Competent to work in most phases of client server relational database management.
• Strong oral, written and customer service skills.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
