Job description:

As a Prototyping Engineer at Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), you will develop and prototype state of the art mechanisms for next-generation AR and VR devices that can create transformative experiences. You will be part of a team exploring new concepts through analytical modeling and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of solutions will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, and optical systems. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, are able to build a concept into a prototype, and can work collaboratively with a wide range of disciplines. Starting with a broad scientific and strong mechanical background, candidates should be willing to become an expert in a new area quickly and rapidly prototype new mechanisms and systems. We're looking for a hands-on builder of opto-mechanical systems and test infrastructure that can enable new research into AR systems.

  • Collaborate with a diverse team of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optics, Materials Science, and Software Engineering to work on Client opto-mechanical technologies.
  • Own the strategy, design, and implementation of prototypes that test hypotheses in the fastest way possible
  • Determine, requisition, and start-up relevant metrology equipment
  • Develop prototypes ranging from simple bench-top units to complicated wearable platforms incorporating cutting-edge embedded technologies
  • Contribute to the development and testing of new sensing schemes
  • Find the learning in every experiment and effectively share with the broader team
  • Expected 50% or more time in the lab

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Robotics, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years industrial experience in mechanical design and manufacturing prototypes
  • Expertise in 3D design modeling (NX and/or Solidworks)
  • Experience with one or more of the following solid mechanics modeling tools: COMSOL, ANSYS, other
  • Practical knowledge of material selection
  • Knowledge of basic manufacturing techniques (Machining, 3D printing, injection molding etc.).
  • Expertise in design for manufacturing and design lifecycle
  • Experience bringing a commercial product to market
  • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • High levels of creativity and quick problem solving capabilities

  • Experience with LabView
  • Experience with embedded design, both electronics and firmware, actuators and sensors
  • Background in control theory, probabilistic filtering, and/or sensor fusion
  • Experience with transducers
