A leading Fortune 500 organization, empowering consumers by providing the highest quality and innovative cancer diagnostic solutions, is seeking a Senior Human Factors Engineer to establish the vision, develop procedures, and facilitate execution of activities

POSITION SUMMARY: Applies knowledge of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) and Usability Engineering (UE) principles, practices and implementation in the development of complex diagnostic systems. Establishes the vision, develops procedures, and facilitates execution of activities relating to HFE/UE. Ensures HFE/UE considerations are represented within requirements development and architecture definition activities for new product development. Continuously improves and expands capabilities in engineering best practices, including collaboration with other sites, and advises teams on the selection and deployment of appropriate tools and standards.

  • Creates and maintains the high-level HFE/UE plan from project start to post launch.
  • Supports the creation of interaction and usability-related requirements.
  • Ensures that all relevant HFE/UE regulations are addressed and adequate compliance documentation is generated.
  • Supports and guides project teams concerning planning, coordination and execution of a usability engineering process during development from project start to post launch.
  • Supports and guides project teams to ensure the application of user centered design, prototyping and usability methods.
  • Supports and guides project teams to ensure implementation of relevant company guidelines related to industrial and user interface design.
  • Elaborates interaction concepts and user interface specifications, collaborating with customer representatives and development-teams.
  • Plans and performs prototype usability tests, documents results and elaborates improvements.
  • Plans, documents and leads Human Factors validation testing.
  • Supports and coordinates product industrial design activities.
  • Collaborates with HFE/UE engineers across other divisions to develop and apply best practices and guidelines.
  • Maintains knowledge of worldwide regulatory requirements and standards relating to HFE/UE.
  • Identifies and recommends tools, standards and methods to drive continual improvement.
  • Conducts and participates in design/project technical reviews.
  • Collaborates with external agencies as required.

Formal Training/Education:
  • Bachelors in Engineering, Human Computer Interaction Design, or a similar technical discipline.
  • Masters/PhD desirable. Experience:
  • 8 years' experience in the development of complex systems, visual design or human/computer interaction.
  • Experience of visual design, industrial design, human/computer interaction or software engineering on new product development required.
  • Experience in risk management (ISO 14971), usability engineering (ISO 62366), human factors engineering (ANSI/AAMI HE75) and safety (IEC 60601/61010) of medical devices desired.
  • Experience with medical devices, especially IVD systems, desired.
  • Fluency in multiple languages is beneficial but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of usability testing principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of relevant HFE/UE regulations and standards.
  • Understanding of multiple cultural environments and their impact on HFE/UE.
  • Understanding of HFE/UE aspects of software, hardware and complex system development.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering and/or industrial design.
  • Strong organizational skills and self-starter.
  • Able to present and discuss data, action plans and recommendations to any level of the organization.
  • Able to display cultural beliefs in day-to-day interactions.
  • Able to independently develop methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
