The Senior DevOps Engineer 1 should be seen as a rock-solid engineer who is a master of their specific domain. The senior engineer 1 is capable of owning technical design for projects of moderate complexity, and understands the tradeoffs in creating good software in their area. They hold a depth of knowledge in systems that enables them to debug those systems effectively without flailing. In addition to writing consistently high-quality code they are aware of industry best practices and trends, and have acquired at least one major skill outside of programming such as monitoring, performance optimization, documentation, integration testing, visual design.
The Senior DevOps Engineer 1 is also responsible for managing, monitoring and deploying highly available, highly scalable applications. The individual will be responsible for one or more environments/systems and work as a member of the Agile/Scrum team daily for the maintenance, upkeep and integrity of these environments.  We are specifically looking for someone with Elastic Search experience.
This position also provides support and answers questions about technical functions and changes made to software and hardware.  Application Engineers may lead discussions and present information to internal partners such as; Development, Quality Assurance, Infrastructure, Product teams, and more.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Evaluates organizational, procedural, and workflow plans and methods.
  • Provides technical direction and recommendations to improve utilization and procedures.
  • Understands and makes well-reasoned design decisions and tradeoffs in their area; able to work in other areas of the code base with guidance.
  • Persistent in the face of roadblocks; dispatches them efficiently, pulling in others as necessary. Requires minimal direction/oversight.
  • Takes the initiative to fix issues before being assigned them. Seeks empirical evidence through proof of concepts, tests and external research; delivers complex products to QA that they believe are well-baked and bug-free.
  • End-to-end responsibility on projects of increasing complexity; contributes to common code.
  • Partners with product and analytics and drive requirements that take into account all parties' needs.
  • Possesses empathy with the user of the software they are producing and uses that empathy to guide decision-making.
  • Communicates technical decisions through design docs, tech talks, and the wiki
  • Mentors junior engineers via pairing, design review, and code review. Contributes frequently to Standups and Demos.
  • Communicates effectively cross functions; can work well with Product, Design, Analytics, etc., as necessary.
  • Proactively identifies problems with requirements (lack of clarity, inconsistencies, and technical limitations) for their own work and adjacent work, and communicates these issues early to help course-correct.
  • Identifies problems/risks of own work and others.
  • Define/improve/utilize capabilities, tools and performance metrics, for support and documentation of key operations processes including Release, Configuration, Change, Capacity, Continuity and Availability Managements in line with business requirements and funding capability.
  • Technical skill and understanding to drive system availability, improvement, and performance.
  • The ability to understand technical jargon and be able to successfully translate it to common terminology for colleagues and others, since they often act as liaisons between multiple departments.
  • Reviews progress and evaluates results with management and other team members.
  • Operates with substantial latitude for unreviewed action or decision.
  • Acts as technical lead to coordinate hardware and software deployments and implementations.
  • Ensures successful delivery and integration of critical infrastructure projects and initiatives.
  • Maintains availability and willingness to work such days and hours as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
  • Cares greatly about automation and has little tolerance for repetitive manual work.
Minimum Experience
  • Experience with Elastic Search
  • Experience with Provisioning tools (Chef/Puppet/Pivotal Cloud Foundry)
  • Experience with Continuous Integration toolsets (Jenkins/Bamboo/TeamCity)
  • Experience with Source Control Management tools (Git/Github/Mercurial/Bitbucket)
  • Strongly preferred application performance monitoring and log analysis utilities such as App Dynamics and Splunk.
  • Solid understanding of key internet protocols and internetworking: HTTP(S), (S)FTP, firewalls, proxy servers, VIP's, load balancing,
  • Knowledge of Database and data manipulation tools (SQL querying & updating)
  • Experience with virtual platforms, i.e., VMware vSphere, Azure, AWS
  • Experience with Windows and Linux-based operating system configuration, automation and management
  • Familiarity with Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and application lifecycle
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a strong customer service attitude
  • Experience supporting highly available, web applications for external clients
  • Experience with service restoration, root cause analysis and problem management processes
  • Experience with complex infrastructure projects
  • Experience with IT Service Management tools such as Axios Assyst, ServiceNow
  • Experience with ITIL Foundation concepts
  • Experience with DevOps concepts
Minimum Education
  • Minimum 2 year technical certificate (4 year college education strongly preferred). Or, equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.   8 plus years technical support experience and proven customer service abilities.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to manage, coordinate, and integrate the cross platform and multi-technology production environments or lead efforts and situations that span multiple groups within the delivery and support organizations.
  • Ability to support and enhance technologies that include (but not limited to): Unix/Linix, Microsoft, Oracle, SQL server, MySQL, MongoDB, SSH, web and app technologies (IIS, apache, tomcat, JBoss), VMware, AD and Storage/SAN.
  • Familiarity with defect tracking tools such as: TFS Team Foundation, Jira
  • Scripting abilities, ie, Unix Shell, PowerShell, Ruby, Python, etc
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work as a team or as an individual contributor.
  • Experience with cloud architecture (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS).
