Job summary: A fact checker verifies information in materials to be published. He or she delves deeply into stated facts and information to confirm and solidify accuracy, improve the quality of those materials and affirm consistency throughout the book. Internet research and analytic skills, attention to detail and excellent reading-
comprehension skills are needed. Accuracy and diligence are essential. A fact checker must rely on independent research and, to an extent, reporting skills. Creativity; communication and writing skills; knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation; interviewing skills; and computer research skills are required.
Primary Responsibilities: The fact checker researches the facts and, if need be, makes phone calls and/or corresponds with sources to confirm those facts. Relying on strong research skills and an ability to both follow protocol and to improvise when needed, the fact checker must uphold the highest standards for verifying and confirming facts. Additionally, a fact checker needs to confirm details with a source without watering down or altering the story itself. Responsiveness, collaboration (with editorial and design teams) and deadline sensitivity are key.
