Job Summary: A editor's main responsibility is for the style and content of a story, stories, section or a publication, either in whole or in part, with supervision from the Editorial Director. You will plan, coordinate, review and edit content, re-writing as needed. The successful candidate will be able to decide which ideas should be pursued and which should get dropped in order to meet quality and accuracy standards. The goal is to provide exceptional, informative and engaging content.
Primary Responsibilities include: Draft story list and manage title or section through various stages of production. Suggest stories and generate headline ideas in alignment with targeted audience's preferences, Check content for accuracy and errors. Edit, proofread and generally improve stories and other features. Assign stories and features, which may mean sending out briefs to writers, that include word count and deadline Cooperate and liaise with fact-checkers designers, photo editors and other editors as needed. Meet deadlines without fail. Contribute ideas for features with writing staff; editing and re-writing articles, Have an understanding of media law and industry ethical guidelines and comply without exception; proofread all pages before going to press; assist other staff to meet their deadlines. Additional qualifications in an area of expertise or specialty may be needed for some publications.
Requirements: Candidate must have strong computer skills and be comfortable using Content Management Software (InCopy and InDesign) as well as research tools. Good news sense and judgment, knowledge of current events and trends are expected. Strong interpersonal & communication skills, professionalism are required.
