General job duties.
Types of procedures required. Obtain laboratory specimens for processing and perform other testing in a professional manner from hospital, clinic and nursing home patients to ensure quality results in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards. Collects and manages samples of blood and specimens from patients; ensures patient safety during the sample collection process. Records and documents patient information accurately. Follows all standard procedures and safety regulations; deploys asepsis techniques during phlebotomy procedures. Communicates with patients, collecting their health information and answering their questions regarding phlebotomy procedures.

Equipment utilized in the unit/dept.
The phlebotomist use a rover device to monitor the needed blood collections and to help verify patient identity. They also use the computers in the lab to report out waived test results. Staff use the pneumatic tube system, centrifuges, Precision Xtra ketone meter, and load the Clinitek Advantus and Bactec 9240 blood culture incubator.

Required skills and minimum years of experience.
Must have the ability to do venipuncture on all age groups using both vacutainer system and using a syringe. Must be able to work at a fast pace and able to move around the hospital quickly.

Specific licensures and certifications/registrations required.
Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED. A phlebotomy certification is preferred but not required, BLS - AHA is required

Shift or schedule requirements.
8 hour shifts

Floating to over units/departments.
This is a hospital-based job, the phlebotomist are expected to cover all area of the hospital that care for patients.

110 bed hospital, 16 bay Emergency room

Tell us about the unit/department specific training and orientation program.
Department orientation is completed on the first day with Sanford. All training would be on the job training. Starting with following are Lead phlebotomist and then progressing to following other training staff. The initial training would happen during the day/evening shift to follow the traveler to become accustom to our facility and workflows.
