Basic Function

To perform various types of maintenance work for highways and parks as required.

Essential Duties
  1. Perform flagging operations on various highway projects.
  2. Ability to work within a highway work zone (surrounded by moving traffic).
  3. Operate various types of highway/park maintenance equipment.
  4. Perform daily routine maintenance checks on equipment.
  5. Transport various types of equipment from one project to another.
  6. Report and receive instructions via 2-way radio.
  7. Perform other related work as required.

Supervision Received

Receives supervision from the Highway Assistant Superintendent & Operational Supervisors.

  • Possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Shall be a minimum of Eighteen (18) years of age
  • College bound or enrolled college student preferable.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Available to work between the hours of 6 a.m.– 4 p.m.
  • Four (4) days a week, at 10 hours a day, Monday - Thursday
  • Shall have prompt and regular attendance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic traffic laws.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform work under varying outside climate conditions
  • Ability to perform physical tasks.
  • Ability to be conscientious, alert and focused on surroundings.
Physical Qualifications
  • Continuous (67-100% of workday) communicating, hearing, use of far and near vision and of exerting up to 20 pounds force.
  • Frequent (34-66% of workday) standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing using legs and arms for support, balancing, bending/twisting, reaching and exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
  • Occasional (1-33% of workday) sitting, crawling, and exerting up to 100 pounds of force.

Working Conditions
  • Continuous (67-100% of workday) exposure to fast moving vehicles and mechanical hazards.
  • Frequent (34-66% of workday) exposure to the outside elements and temperature changes.
  • Occasional (1-33% of workday) exposure to extreme heat, wet or humid conditions, noise, vibrations; exposure to fumes, noxious odors, dust and physically confined work zone sites.

Equipment Used

Hand tools such as hammers, power tools and shovel/broom; transportation vehicles such as an automobile, pick-up, trailer, highway/parks machinery; personal protective equipment, work boots, and hearing and eye protection; and a 2-way radio.
