Job Description: The Materials Science & Engineering department supports many different Dow businesses through product design and development, both at the conceptual stage as well as final detail design during the execution phase. In addition to product design itself, product prototyping, product tooling design and manufacturing.
Specifically, the job posted consists of three areas (It is expected that while most candidates are not "expert " in all of these competencies, very high skill in concept development and real life expertise in computer aided design is imperative along with interest and willingness to learn the remainder are essential.):
1. Develop part and tooling designs, primarily using CAD type resources working in conjunction with engineers.
2. Work with tooling resources including Prototype Shop CNC Mold Manufacturing equipment to execute the work necessary to build high quality molds, tooling & prototypes.
3. Work with rapid prototyping resources to create samples of new product designs that can be shown to potential customers and used for functional testing.
Minimum Requirements:
Special Skills/Qualifications:
Applied knowledge of engineering processes for the development of prototypes or other original concepts.
Must work safely and adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

Experience/Education:
5 years minimum design experience
Formal training in design or engineering related field
CAD experience required; Solidworks or NX, although Solidworks is prefered.

Proficient at leading multidiscipline project teams.
Meet with client/customer to determine project objectives.
Negotiates deliverables and project timing with client/customer.

Submits/writes project initiation requests.
Develops project plan and estimate of time required for completion of project.

Communication
Keeps project stakeholders informed regarding project status and changes
Communicate to engineer(s) the status/progress of projects/assignments.
Expected to interface with other engineering disciplines on multidiscipline project teams.
Occasional interaction with consultants and external vendors/suppliers
Schedules and leads design and progress reviews
Participates in design reviews, team checks, site inspections, and progress meetings to obtain feedback and learning.
Creates/releases work request, drawings, and 3D CAD files to the shop for fabrication.
Creates/releases complete work requests and 3D files to Prototyping Group for fabrication.
Frequent communication with the shop on active projects
Technical Skills
Collect field data and take field measurements
Generates rough sketches, or schematics to develop engineering concepts into visual designs.
Proficient at taking concepts and transferring to mechanical design.
Specifies dimensions and other data for layout and/or detailing. .
Develops and lays out original design concepts.
Develops layouts into detailed designs
Able to perform fundamental static structural design analyses
Can determine components that require detailed stress analysis and assemble documents for analysis to be done.
Make revisions and adjustments to design.
Proficient at generating materials and components lists
Demonstrated competence in 2D and 3D design tools (Solidworks or NX)
Proficient at organizing and tracking CAD files
Knows where to find information and applies with some direction from senior designers or discipline engineer(s).
General awareness of proper fabrication techniques and processes
General awareness of plastics processing technologies
Demonstrates knowledge of MEC standards, practices and procedures
Able to check function and fit of components and assemblies in detail drawings
Able to ensure proper component installation and assembly.

The job is based in Midland, MI and is a combination of "hands-on " activities coupled with medium amount of engineering Design and other "desk type " efforts. Some travel is possible. People with prior experience in Design and Tool & Die type shop operations tend to be more successful in this position.

We need people that have broad design and engineering perspective while at the same time are able to execute the specific project duties required to make the projects successful. In addition to executing the actual design efforts
necessary to create new product solutions, these duties may take the form of lab testing activities, shop operations including setting up equipment, helping make tooling and design modifications to enable product operations success, and possibly even doing final tooling and mold finishing. Work also involves working with competitive products, "Tear-down " to understand their design and manufacturing basis, developing new concepts and designs using CAD design tools, modifying product designs, and preparing analysis models.
