Job Description -

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall
  • Provide support for customization and expansion of scientific data and knowledge management systems (SDKM), principally focusing on improving User Interface (UI) and visualization methods that can aid researchers in accessing, querying, sharing, organizing and utilizing scientific data and derived knowledge.
  • Provide expertise on visual user interfaces for scientific data.
  • Provide technical guidance and support in developing user interfaces that support SDKM solutions, including interfaces for query, browsing, reports, graphs and other custom visualizations.
  • Advise software engineers and researchers on best practices for building web-based and client-based user interfaces and visualizations of research data
  • Provide guidance to scientists, research administrators, computer scientists and information technology professionals in the areas of data-centric user interfaces and visualizations.
  • Monitor new capabilities, techniques, and methods for developing user interfaces and visualizations that can be applied for SDKM.
  • Develop and maintain SDKM user interface/visualization solutions.
  • Examine, evaluate, test and provide critical assessment of new and emerging UI and visualization tools for the tasks of sharing, accessing, querying, organizing and visualizing scientific data.
  • Design, configure and implement new UI and visualization solutions in response to evolving SDKM needs.
  • Design and maintain software solutions that are, or can be, deliverable components of SDKM solutions; ensure that critical, high-demand applications are available for use.
  • Draft work products and documents to support training in SDMK management; generate user-friendly tools and procedures.
  • Attend group meetings with scientists and diverse technology specialists; present findings to individuals and groups.
  • Apply environmental health terminologies in UI/Visualization tools.
  • Work with data curators in applying environmental health ontologies and standard terminologies for building improved UI/Visualization tools, e.g., for use in advanced guided search techniques, in applying metadata and ontologies for visual organization of data, for data-driven clustering of research data sets.
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Library Science, Bioinformatics, Engineering or a related discipline; three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor's degree is equivalent to a Master's degree.
  • Minimum of four (5) years of related experience developing UI and visualization/charting tools for application to scientific, clinical or other research data.
  • Demonstrated experience in administering deployed visualization and UI systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in building UI systems that use backend storage systems.
  • Experience with relational databases and with other data and/or knowledge management systems.
  • Demonstrated fluency working in Windows and Linux environments and broad familiarity working in a scientific computing environment.
  • Demonstrated programming ability in web-based programming languages, including one or more of the following: Javascript, PHP, Python, or GO.
  • Demonstrated programming ability using web-based frameworks, e.g., Django, Angular.
  • Demonstrated programming ability using web-based visualization and charting, especially D3.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
