 Sr. Database Engineer
The Sr. Database Engineer reports to the Server and Storage Manager for the Americas and will be responsible for day-to-day administration of the Database Infrastructure and related systems in the Americas.  The Sr. Database Engineer shall have expert understanding of Database systems, it will be primarily but not limited to Oracle DB, MySQL, and MariaDB, additional knowledge of Sybase and Mongo DB would be beneficial. Knowledge of working on these database platforms within a financial services environment is a must.  The role serves as a liaison between Infrastructure and the Business regarding the implementation and maintenance of the server systems within the Americas, while maintaining strong relationships with the Global Server teams in EMEA and APAC.  Maintains the operational health of the systems infrastructure and supports Applications and Users which are dependent upon Server infrastructure.  Monitors log files, performance issues and the production environment for mission critical systems.
The Sr. Database Engineer is responsible for providing technical support for the Oracle DB, MySQL, and MariaDB Infrastructure including day-today administration of Server systems, incident response and remediation, as well as implementation of new technologies. It is extremely important to the company that production server and storage systems offer the highest reliability and performance possible. The Sr. Database Engineer is challenged to drive standards and document reference architecture based on requirements from business, application development and operations to help achieve a state-of-the-art environment that meets current and future business objectives. Trains and develops technical support and applications staff to better utilize server and storage infrastructure as it pertains to Database systems. Provides and designs tools to assist in the management of the environment. Work to provide a working model of our Database environments for capacity assessment and planning.
Develop a methodology for the ongoing assessment of Database Compute and Storage performance and the identification of problem areas. Develop a security scheme for the Database environment, as well as assisting in disaster recovery if necessary. Provide leadership during the development and enhancement of production applications including working with applications, technical support and operations during the design, development and implementation of applications. Work with the infrastructure support area to develop both the physical and the logical Server and Storage administration functions and assists in the development of our computing environments. Work with others in IT to build the logical Compute and Storage area and provide technical guidance during all phases of the development process. Work with vendors in evaluating and implementing new technologies.
Qualified candidates will possess the following qualifications/skill sets:
General Requirements
  • BE or BS Degree in one of the following subject areas: Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Technology or related field preferred
  • 5 years IT operation with strong understanding of IT infrastructure, theories, principles, and practices
  • 10 years Database Server experience
  • Understanding of, and experience with, server-client computing environments
  • Experience with all aspects of the Plan, Build, and Run of Database server environments
  • Knowledge of reporting and query tools and practices
  • Good understanding of the organizations goals and objectives
  • Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Technical documentation skills
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language
  • Self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

Required Skills
  • Expert in Oracle DB technologies including but not limited to:
    • Oracle DB 10g, 11g, and 12c Administration
    • Oracle Enterprise Manager
    • Oracle RAC
    • Oracle replication technologies (Streams, Data Guard, GoldenGate, Oracle Site Guard)
  • Expert in MySQL and Maria DB technologies including but not limited to:
    • MariaDB Enterprise Administration
    • MariaDB Enterprise Cluster
  • Expert Knowledge of Database Concepts and duties:
    • Data modeling and database design
    • Data interface protocols
    • Managing data security
    • Managing development projects
    • Predicting future Database trends for hardware usage and user load
    • Install, patch and maintain all Database software
    • Tune all Database instance components including SQL and PL/SQL, etc..
    • Approve all production schema changes
    • Approve changes to database design
    • Control all migrations of Database schema objects
    • Design and implement a backup & recovery system
  • Strong Knowledge of Solaris 9 &10, SUSE Linux 11, RHEL 5,6, 7
  • Strong Administration Skills of the following technologies:
    • Security
    • Identity Management
    • LDAP
  • Working Knowledge of Virtualization concepts (LDOM, RHEV, KVM, VMWare)
  • Working knowledge of Operating Systems Server Administration
    • Solaris Unix
    • RedHat Linux
    • Suse Linux
    • Microsoft Windows
  • Proficiency with Scripting Technologies
    • Unix/Linux Shell Scripting
    • SQL Scripting (SQL, PL/SQL, etc.)
    • Perl Scripting a plus
  • Strong knowledge of Data Architecture concepts
  • Strong Patch Management experience
  • Prefer a Sr. Database Engineer person with a  Dev-Ops, forward thinking mindset
    • Sybase DB experience a plus
    • MS SQL DB experience a plus
    • Mongo DB experience a plus
 
Prior Work Experience:
 
  • 10 Years Sr. Database Engineer experience within the Financial Sector
 
Education and Abilities Requirements:
       Educational experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Industry Certifications such as Oracle Database 12c Administrator Certified Professional or equivalent work experience required
  • ITIL v3 Foundation Certification a plus
