Position Summary
Client Ventures is seeking a Head of Emerging Technology to join our San Francisco team. This person will play a key role building the emerging technology practice that embraces the accelerating tech-driven disruption and "Innovation is Everywhere” environment we work and live in today and in the future. We are seeking a leader who is passionate about next generation technology and the societal and economic change it can bring while pragmatic and insightful about its application in financial services and business at large.

The Head of Emerging Technology will utilize an applied R&D operating model to identify, monitor, learn, experiment and share information about emerging technology that is relevant to the Client enterprise and our clients. The operating model will rely heavily on collaboration with Client business and technology groups as well as external partners.

The Head of Emerging Technology will monitor tech developments broadly but dive deep into a short-list of technologies. A key focus will be planning and conducting experiments and tests to gain first-hand experience, learn and derive insights applicable to the Client business. This role will ensure the emerging technology work is aligned with and supports the overall Client Ventures strategy and functions, including Venture Investing and Client's Client 10X internal innovation program. In addition, this person will leverage emerging technology strategy, research, and testing work conducted across the global Client enterprise, including the Innovation Labs and Operations and Technology teams.

We are seeking a technology leader with a passion and curiosity about disruptive technology and experience architecting and engineering products and systems leveraging today's disruptive technologies (e.g., AI/Client, smart device & automation, big data, mobile, cloud & edge computing, Augmented Reality (AR)). Financial services domain knowledge, the ability to succeed in a start-up environment, strong analytical and communications skills, and the ability to collaborate and succeed in a large, global company are also important credentials.

This role will report to the Head of the Innovation Network.

Build an emerging technology practice that relies heavily on collaboration and partnerships

Remain on the forefront of new and emerging technologies through a broad range of internal and external engagements and learning including leveraging the resources of Silicon Valley

Engage, partner and collaborate with Client business and technology leadership to explore applications and implications of next generation technologies (i.e., McKinsey horizon three innovations)

Maximize the output and value of the Innovation Network by leveraging Client's vast technology resources, Client Ventures innovation capabilities and network, and external partners

Partner and collaborate with the Venture Investing team on emerging technology trends and start-up company research and vetting. Engage Portfolio companies when appropriate for POCs, co-development, or experimentation

Lead ideas to execution by utilizing an emerging tech applied R&D process, e.g.,
  • Build and maintain an Emerging Technology "Radar " site
  • Create and distribute content
  • Bring to life and illustrate the future applications and impact of next generation technology
  • Plan and conduct experiments and share learning
    Prototype concepts and ideas with engineering partners and Client Labs to deliver real world examples/proof points; drive experiments that take calculated risks

    Promote and communicate emerging technology trends, opportunities, and POVs internally and externally identifying the relevancy to Client's existing and future state businesses and in the context of FinTech disruption

    Advocate for and support investing in new tech capabilities and solutions can address real problems and deliver measurable value, e.g., Client Labs and other new product development organizations; Challenge the norm and explore "what if? "

    Operate both as a leader driving technology learning and exploration as well as a partner supporting Client business and technology-driven initiatives enabled by emerging technology capabilities

    • BA/BS Bachelor's Degree
    • Creative and energetic with a strong interest in technology and its impact on business and the world at large
    • Insightful with the ability to identify accelerating and irreversible consumer, business and world trends enabled and/or associated with technology
    • Willingness to take risks and put forth a point of view and hypotheses about the potential and impact of next generation technology
    • Strategic thinking and ability to incorporate larger business context into emerging technology learning, exploration and knowledge sharing
    • Has broad skills and experience with multiple software products, infrastructure, technologies and services and is able to shape and deliver innovative technology solutions
    • Experience working in large, global and complex organizations as well as young, agile startup companies
    • Experience presenting emerging tech concepts and industry, business and client impact to senior executives, business and technology colleagues, external audiences and client representatives
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills
    • Comfortable and adept at matrix-management, 2nd and 3rd degree influence & business and technology collaboration and partnering
    • A high bar across the board - from your own contributions to the people you work with to the work products you work on
    • A never-ending desire to grow and learn
    • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to use data and metrics to back up assumptions and recommendations
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where continuous adaptability is required
