It is located in the North-eastern part of the Bay Area. Fairfield was founded in 1856 by clippership captain Robert H. Waterman, and named after his former hometown of Fairfield, Connecticut. It is the home of Travis Air Force Base and the headquarters of Jelly Belly. With a population of 108,321 at the 2010 census, it is slightly smaller in population than Vallejo.

Travis Air Force Base
Situated in the San Francisco Bay Area and known as the "Gateway to the Pacific ", Travis Air Force Base handles more cargo and passenger traffic through its airport than any other military air terminal in the United States. Today, Travis AFB includes approximately 7,260 active USAF military personnel, 4,250 Air Force Reserve personnel and 3,770 civilians. Travis AFB has a major impact on the community as a number of military families and retirees have chosen to make Fairfield their permanent home. Travis AFB is the largest employer in the City and Solano County as well, and the massive Travis workforce has a local economic impact of more than $1 billion annually. The Base also contributes a large number of highly skilled people to the local labor pool. The base is also host to David Grant USAF Medical Center, a 265-bed, $200 million Air Force teaching hospital, which serves both in-service and retired military personnel.

REQUIREMENTS (duties include but are not limited to)

Inpatient Care:
  • Plans and manages antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care of low-risk obstetrical patients.
  • Evaluates prenatal patient's condition and formulates plan of care to maintain healthy progress.
  • Consults with the on-call physician and co-manages high risk patients as appropriate.
  • Provides intrapartum care within scope of practice and expertise.
  • Attends vaginal deliveries.
  • Institutes lifesaving emergency measures pending obstetrician's and pediatrician's arrival.
  • Performs first assist duties during cesarean deliveries.
  • Performs rounds on all assigned inpatients at least once daily.
  • Documents patient care in accordance with established unit/MTF procedures.
  • Documents all admissions and discharge summaries in accordance with established MTF procedures.
Outpatient Care:
  • Renders comprehensive care to women from menarche through menopause. Plans and manages prenatal, postpartum, well woman gynecological, family planning and preconceptual care.
  • Performs first trimester ultrasound evaluations for pregnancy dating and limited third trimester ultrasound for amniotic fluid assessment, fetal presentation, cardiac activity verification and placental location.
  • Requests diagnostic tests as clinically indicated; analyzes and interprets laboratory and radiological reports.
  • Prescribes medications, as required, in accordance with privileges and MTF rules and regulations.
  • Consults with OB/GYN physicians and other specialists as appropriate for complex cases.
  • Refers to specialty care as appropriate.
  • Documents pertinent patient information, assessment, and plan in the chart electronically as required by established procedures, Federal Law, or Air Force Instructions.
  • Facilitates postpartum patient's optimum physical and psychological transition to parenthood.
  • Counsels parents on normal growth and development of infant.
  • Provides guidance and encourages acceptable health practices.
  • Manages gynecological conditions and performs annual health screening examinations. Orders and evaluates tests to detect disease processes.
  • Provides family planning counseling and various methods of birth control.
  • Reviews and documents telephone consults regularly in accordance with established unit procedures.
  • Attends and participates in high-risk obstetric and quality meetings.
  • Collaborates with health care team members to improve patient care delivery.
  • Performs all care IAW individual privileges that are awarded by the Medical Treatment Facility credentials committee.
  • Participates in peer review activities.
Additional Requirements:
  • Certified Nurse Midwife may participate in health education programs designed to increase awareness and knowledge to patients planning to give birth
  • Certified Nurse Midwife is required to teach medical students, resident physicians and physician assistants the management of antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care of low-risk obstetrical patients and outpatient care of women.
  • Graduated from an accredited baccalaureate degree program in nursing (BSN) acceptable to the USAF Surgeon General.
  • Completion of an approved course in nurse midwifery acceptable to the USAF Surgeon General.
  • Master's degree from accredited program in specialty.
  • Have and maintain a current license to practice nursing as a registered nurse in a US jurisdiction.
  • Certified as a Nurse Midwife by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
  • Has and maintains current BLS, ACLS and NRP certification.
