The Responsibilities:
The Communications Planning Director is responsible for how, when and where an idea or experience show up. They work with our teams and clients to reach target audiences and meet objectives by providing keen insights and strategic rigor, building messaging frameworks, defining communications tasks and channel roles, and defining calls-to-action and KPIs. Beyond client work, this role will be responsible for establishing the communications planning discipline with the agency.
This role collaborates with our core team members and clients to champion a modern approach by understanding customer behavior and context, and then envisioning, planning and orchestrating strategic communication system to define how brands connect to people. The strong use of data to define tasks, drive solutions and optimize for success is crucial.
Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
  • Lead the development of strategy that informs when, where and how a brand should connect:
    • Understand the customers' path to conversion
    • Define the roles, key message and key outcome of each channel
    • Define the interaction of the channels that form the ecosystem
    • Define the context and requirements for creative execution
    • Lead a data-driven approach that will define communication KPIs for each key element of the campaign to measure performance and continually optimize campaign ROI
  • Analyze and illuminate how consumers interact with devices, content and media, then develop insights based on their motivation to reveal what value a brand needs to provide.
  • Envision and design orchestrated systems of brand communications, partnering with digital, media and creative.
  • Create plans that seamlessly blend paid media efforts with owned platforms, digital and social content and PR-oriented media activities.
  • Champion the use of data to understand behaviors and uncover unexpected insight that inspire bold ideas for connection and measurement
  • Build senior level client relationships, providing guidance on their competitive threats, evolving consumer behaviors to guide their teams toward the next generation of holistic brand experience solutions that drive business impact
  • Champion a team-wide integrated planning process
  • Stay up-to-date on opportunities and changes with channels and vendors, and regularly inform the agency for broader team knowledge.
The Essentials
This role requires: thought leadership; an intimate understanding of how audiences and influencers interact with channels and technology; focus on solving clients' business challenges; and an ability to create comprehensive plans that build connections. Specific requirements include someone who:
  • Can bring this new function alive: you will both define the role you and give it the energy and value to make it indispensable
  • Gets how communications, creative and media work together
  • A strong generalist: digitally fluent and deep, but not myopic; equally at home in paid/earned/owned, digital versus traditional versus PR
  • Strong understanding of paid search, social, digital targeting and lead generation
  • Knowledge and ongoing discovery of vendors, platforms and partners who can aid our efforts in the space
  • A passion for strategy, culture, trends, impacting behavior, and inspiring others
  • 8+ years experience in communications planning: program planning and management; fluency in a range of channels; experience with core planning tools and systems; ability to deliver programs from theory to execution; experience leading people and projects; biz dev experience
  • Be equally at home with facts, data, insights, strategy, instinct and imagination
  • Passion to continually absorb, learn, evolve and teach in the fast-changing digital space
  • Highly effective communicator, writer and presenter
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented
