Database Administrators (DBAs) provide a broad range of services surrounding the city's SQL Server, Oracle, and MySQL enterprise database infrastructure and data assets ranging from RDBMS maintenance, operation, and planning; backup and recovery; performance tuning, problem and incident management; enterprise data architecture design, planning and implementation; curation and development of database architecture, ERDs, operation and maintenance documentation using organization approved standard templates; leads or participates in information technology projects and performs broad management and technical duties as required; development of ETL jobs, stored procedures, and data queries.
The focus of the role transitions from basic database maintenance, operation, backup and recovery along with management of the data contained within the RDBMS systems to database architecture, capacity planning, project management and indirect supervision of other DBAs. Database architecture, requirements gathering, project management and team development take on increasing focus during this progression. Success requires developing very strong skills in each of these areas over the course of career progression.
  1. Manages complex database management, configuration and programming in support of the enterprise database environment. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Managing the installation, maintenance, and technical support of enterprise database systems and other related vendor products. Provides vendor management for database and application systems.
    • Developing, documenting, and implementing backup procedures to allow for business continuity and disaster recovery
    • Developing, documenting, implementing and formalized testing of database disaster recovery plans
    • Ensuring all database systems are kept at appropriate and fully supported versions and that security and other patches are applied on a regular basis in coordination with the CISO.
    • Managing and monitoring all database server storage systems and performing capacity planning to ensure ongoing availability of storage resources
    • Adheres to and ensures all servers comply with city security policies and industry best practices related to system security.
    • Performing routine database health checks and database server level performance tuning
    • Uses software tools, develops Unix/Linux and SQL scripts or uses other system programming tools to automate complex database management and programming tasks
    • Performing problem determination, troubleshooting and resolution of technical problems with the databases
    • Provides on-call (off-hour and weekend) database support
  2. Acts as internal consultant in the evaluation, selection, and installation of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) systems that make use of SQL Server, Oracle or MySQL. This includes, but is not limited to, responsibility for:
    • participation in the evaluation and selection of the system; including feasibility studies and impact analysis
    • determination and recommendation of database hardware architecture
    • installation and configuration of the database
    • execution of Security Policies ensuring that the application is in compliance
    • developing a backup/recovery strategy
    • participation in subsequent upgrades
    • act as a liaison with vendor on technical issues to achieve a timely resolution to related problems
  1. Provide database design function in cooperation with Application Development staff on web application development. This includes, but is not limited to, responsibility for:
    • determination of the database architecture
    • design or design review of database objects and user security access
    • design or design review of data model diagrams
    • SQL performance troubleshooting
    • creating or providing access to development and test databases
    • deploying database objects to production databases
  2. Leads, manages & plans database related large projects and assignments. This includes:
    • Develops project work plans, project objectives documents, and plans using project management software. Conducts kick off meetings, coordinates and schedules work on assigned projects, tracks project progress and task assignments, and manages changes within the change control process.
    • Matrix manages work efforts related to the completion of tasks and assignments of other staff assigned to the project. Manages the work of consultants and contractors that may be used.
    • Coordinates and tracks project budgets.
    • Provides regular written and verbal communication on project status via written reports, regular status meetings with team members, and executive advisory board (EAB) meetings with department/division heads.
  3. Provide data services for key city systems. Including:
    • Develops ETL jobs using a variety of city-supported tools
    • Documents ERDs for RDBMS databases
    • Create stored procedures and queries to provide data for reporting, ETL and visualization purposes
  4. Maintains and develops professional skills through ongoing training and career development, including self- study, classroom training, and industry seminars and workshops.
  5. Other:
    • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
    • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
    • Know and comply with all city and department policies; participate in professional trainings and development; and adhere to attendance and workplace attire policies.
