The Role: Sr. Systems Administrator

The Senior Systems Administrator - Linux is part of the Cloud Ops team, charged with architecting and maintaining our customer-hosting infrastructure. The Senior System Administrator works with a team of motivated, articulate and knowledgeable IT professionals across different regions of the world.
Essential Functions:
  • Manages, administers and operates Linux servers in Innovative production environment, in support of our client's 24x7x365 high-availability service level commitment to customers.
  • Performs OS installation, support, performance tuning, monitoring, applying service packs, upgrades, etc.
  • Performs Linux OS upgrades and patching to meet compliance requirements.
  • Administers VMware including host installation and configuration, guest provisioning and maintenance activities.
  • Manages virtual environments based on VMware's ESX and public cloud offerings viz., AWS.
  • Manages high-end storage clusters (from EMC/Dell/Pure Storage) and ensures 100% availability.
  • Develops and uses automation using Chef/Puppet/perl/shell/aws cli scripts for storage, archiving, and backup, as well as general Linux system administration processes.
  • Works with system hardware vendors for ongoing support issues, release schedules, fix-packs and general system administration issues.
  • Manages archiving and backup technologies to efficiently and effectively support our client's data retention requirements.
  • Provides end user support for system infrastructure (server and networks).
  • Proactively monitors server systems (e.g. uptime, failover, anti-viral, anti-spamming, etc.).
  • Performs receiving, racking, cabling and installation of new systems and expansion components.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Participates in long-term strategies for IT.
  • Writes tools, scripts, etc., as necessary to aid the team and support robust automation.
  • Creates, maintains and updates process and procedure documents.
  • Supports miscellaneous systems as necessary to aid the team.
  • Performs on-call duty and rotation with the Operations team.

Education, Licenses, and Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, or any related field; or combination of education and 4 years of relevant experience, and/or relevant certifications.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience working as a systems administrator in a primarily Linux environment - preferably RedHat or CentOS.
  • Automation experience with Chef, Puppet or other automation or scripting tools such as shell/perl/python/bash.
  • Demonstrated experience with performance monitoring, tuning, and troubleshooting.
Critical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:
  • Knowledge/experience with networking technologies and protocols associated with co-location datacenters and/or public cloud environments.
  • Expert level VMware or other virtualization product experience in a high-performance always-on environment.
  • Scripting and/or automation skills such as Chef, Puppet, Spacewalk and shell/perl/python/bash.
  • Expertise administering, supporting and/or managing Linux systems – preferably RedHat/CentOS – on virtualized environment on VMWare's ESX hardware devices and Cloud environments.
  • Expertise of operating system internals, filesystem structures, DNS, NTP, SendMail, and machine architectures in a Linux operating systems.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills and ability to understand complex relationships in a multi-tier architecture, among security, web, application and database tiers.
  • Practical, hand-on experience with public-cloud systems such as AWS or Azure.
  • Commitment to quality and exceeding customer expectations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and proven success record.
  • Database administration skills (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • Preferred expertise managing iSCSI based storage (experience with EMC/Dell EqualLogic or Pure is a plus).
  • Preferred 5 years of experience administering and supporting Enterprise Linux environments.
  • Expertise managing iSCSI based storage filers (specific experience with EMC/Dell Equalogic/Pure Storage is a plus).
  • Experience working with Cisco firewalls/switching and using Solarwinds is a plus.
  • Experience working in a SAAS environment is a plus.
  • Experience working in a global IT environment a plus.
  • Expertise analyzing and mediating external Internet issues a plus.
  • Due to the nature of the position, must be familiar with working in a data center and must be able to lift 50 lbs. overhead.
  • Due to the 24x7 operations of the facility, must be able to work at flexible work schedule, may include nights, weekends, holidays, etc.
